Common Admission Test (CAT) for admissions to the seven IIMs is the most popular entrance test among the test takers. However, it is also true over the recent years many more management institutes and business schools, numbering nearly 1300 of them, barring 400 which recognise CAT for admission, accept the scores of other tests like the XAT. XAT is an all-India test conducted by Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI, Jamshedpur). The skill sets desired and aptitude test streams tested in XAT are similar to CAT and others.

Apart from XLRI, more than 60 other management institutes consider XAT score as one of the criteria for admission to their MBA programs, others  that accept XAT are Xavier Institute of Management Bhuvaneshwar (XIMB), SP Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) and many others.

XAT Analysis

As compared to XAT `2015, which was a balanced test with 84 questions, XAT `2016 was an easier one with degree of difculty lower in each of the main objective sections with increased duration of the test. Four different variants were given where degree of difculty was also different.

In verbal & logical ability questions numbering 30, where more in logic oriented specically of critical reasoning (GMAT type) variety.

In DI and quantitative ability questions numbering 29, were of of normal level of difculty, though DI was of a higher level of difficulty. They required thorough knowledge of the fundamentals to be done with a high degree of quickness. The questions were longer. In analytical reasoning and decision making, questions numbering 23 of 4 sets were more into common sense with decision making questions being the easier ones. The marking scheme for 2016 was different with negative marking for unattempted qestions upto 13 with questions negative mark of 0.05 each.It is noteworthy,XLRI only considers GK and Essay scores, while others do not.

In conclusion,it was a balanced test across sections but was predictably tougher than previous years' tests.Feedbacks from candidates of XAT 2016 indicates the hallmark of XAT- a test of aptitude abilities compiled with incisive probing into the value systems and beliefs of the candidates aspiring toget into the business school.
